Pre-Press
Typesetting may be defined as the arrangement of letters, numbers, and characters that need to be printed, on a space. This is done in order to maximize the printing space available that will enable the printer to estimate the text orientation on the page.
Prepress, on the other hand, may be defined as the steps involved in the process of creation of the page layout to the final printing. Some of the steps involved include preparing of a printing plate, image carrier or form, ready for mounting on a printing press, as well as the adjustment of images and texts or to create the print file of the highest quality.
We have mentioned below a few evolutionary steps in the process of prepress:
- Typesetting is the step involving the representation of textual material in the graphical format on the paper. This was before the advent of desktop publishing, where typesetting of printed material was being produced in the print shops using compositors or typesetters.
- Copy-editing is done by an editor to improve the formatting, style, and accuracy of a manuscript. This step is done before the work of proofreaders, who specialize in documents handling before the final publication.
- Markup uses a set of annotations that are converted to text that provide information regarding the structure of the text and its display. Markup languages have found their utility for several centuries and are still used in the modern day computer typesetting.
- Proofing is the process of creation of an accurate representation of the artwork that is done before starting the actual production process. It acts as a bridge between the printer and the final customers and ensures that the final product produced meets the standard set by the customers. Proofing is performed for all the individual elements of the product such as images, text etc. Three types of proofing must be checked at this step and the printed out must be done subsequently. These proofing are the print-ready PDF files, the printer’s proof, and the imposition proof.
- Screening us the continuous adjustment that is made to the tone of images such as photographs.
- Imposition involves the combination of several pages into a single signature form.
- Separation involves specifying the images or text so as to put them on the plates for the application of single printing media such as inks, varnishes, etc.
- Manufacturing of plates is the use of various materials of plates that should address the issues of printing strategy. Normally rubber, plastic, and aluminum are utilized as plates and in addition film which is the photomechanical presentation and preparing of light-touchy emulsion on a printing plate. Assembling of plates should be very much arranged and conveyed in advance.
- For the final printing, a high-quality print (PDF) file is manufacturing.
- It is important to select the right paper, as it will form the base of all the other parameters.
